Several Things About Fleetwood Mac You Didn't Know
Many bands have been sucessful in their careers but one of the most longest-lasting bands, Fleetwod Mac, have stood the test of time. Existing for over fifty years, the band has sold 120 million records worldwide.
They are practically "two" bands
Fleetwood Mac's career was split in two parts. The first part, a cult bluesy following with founder Peter Green saw them playing blues and even traces of prog rock. The second part, the more commercial part, saw the band reaching a larger audience and is the era that the band today is most commonly associated with.
Though named after Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, McVie was not an original member
John McVie did not play on their first gigs or on their first song recorded, Old Grey Mare. The bass player then was Bob Brunning as McVie was in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. After the Bluesbreakers changed direction, however, McVie joined and Brunning left the next day.
Christine "Perfect" McVie is also responsible for designing some albums
Joining in 1970, McVie designed the cover on albums from Khlin House, to Heroes Are Hard to Find. Her songwritting and vocals were most prominent after 1974.
Christine McVie was also a hit and miss.
McVie did not really enjoy performing too much and the band even had to go as far as to coax her to join Fleetwood Mac for their 1997-98 tour. Christine McVie left in 2003 until her 2014 return.
Their 1977 LP Rumours is a best-seller
The album was #1 in six countries including the US, Canada, UK, and Australia. One of its singles, Don't Stop was even used during Bill Clinton's 1992 campaign and associated with him. Recording the album was hard because the band were going through personal relationship problems at the time.
They recorded Black Magic Woman first.
Sorry Santana, but Fleetwood Mac recorded the original version of the song on their 1968 debut album. Santana, did, in fact, record the song two years later for their 1970 LP Abracses.
Well folks, that's pretty much it. To be honest, I wish I had seen them live while Lindsey Buckingham was still present.
